Born in Burns, Allegany County, NY, 14 December 1824; grain dealer in Burr Oak at the time of enlistment. Entered service in company G, First Infantry, at organization, as Captain, April 24, 1861, at Burr Oak, for 3 months, age 36. Commissioned May 1, 1861. Mustered in May 1, 1861. Mustered out at Detroit, MI, Aug. 7, 1861. Re-entered service as Captain, company B, First Infantry (3 years), at organization, Aug. 17, 1861. Commissioned Aug. 17, 1861. Mustered in Sept. 12, 1861. Commissioned Major April 28, 1862. Mustered Feb. 1, 1863. Commissioned Lieutenant Colonel Aug. 30, 1862. Mustered to date Feb. 1, 1863. Commissioned Colonel March 18, 1863. Mustered April 21, 1863. Wounded twice in action at Fredericksburg, VA, Dec. 3, 1862. Wounded slightly at Gettysburg, PA, July 2, 1863. Mustered out and honorably discharged at expiration of term of service, Dec. 22, 1864. Brevet Brigadier General, U. S. Volunteers, March 13, 1865, for gallant and meritorious services during the war. He was living in Washington, DC, with his wife, Electa A. Abbott, at the time of his death Oct. 9, 1908; buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA.
